Toph — Character Guide

Toph is the closest launch character to a grounded bully: she uses armor, command grabs, pull effects and strong knockdown control to make opponents regret moving carelessly. Her first layer is approachable, but her support-specific pillars, platforms and combo conversions create real specialist depth. Start with The Boulder if you want the armor plan to stay obvious, then test Badgermole or The Hippo when setups and movement matter more.

Who should play Toph?

Toph does not politely evade a problem; she plants her feet and makes the problem move. The seismic-sense references, armor, taunts and command grabs turn her confidence into a character who can win the emotional round before the health bar is empty.

Toph's first match plan

Use Rock Slide and grounded buttons to claim space, Rooted Stance when you have a read on the incoming hit, and Shifting Earth or knockdown tools to keep the opponent where Toph is strongest. Armor is permission to challenge one expected attack, not permission to ignore multi-hit pressure, throws or resource cost.

Rooted Stance makes a read tangible

Rooted Stance immediately grants armor, with The Boulder extending it into Hyper Armor while Chi drains. Its branches include a sweep, armored tackle, High Ground platform and Shifting Earth pull. Badgermole improves pillar and setup play, while The Hippo changes how platform movement supports pressure. The stance is strongest when the opponent has committed to a predictable strike. Holding it without a read spends resources and gives the opponent time to choose a throw, delay or multi-hit answer.

How should you choose a support?

Supports are not traditional active assists. They modify movement, move properties, resources, or combo routes, so there is no context-free “best support.”

Support variation

Badgermole

Improves pillars for ranged control and combo setups.

Pick for: For setup players who enjoy controlling wake-up space.

Support variation

The Boulder

Adds stronger armor behavior and command-grab flexibility.

Pick for: The clearest starting point for the grounded bully plan.

Support variation

The Hippo

Improves High Ground and moving-platform pressure.

Pick for: For movement-heavy pressure and support-specific routes.

Which key moves should you learn first?

MovePurposeCaution
Rock SlideForward earth movement that avoids high attacks. It does not solve lows, throws or every projectile.
Rooted StanceImmediate armor with support-specific branches.Holding armor with The Boulder drains Chi.
Crushing TackleMidrange armored advance from Rooted Stance.Armor property depends on stance and support state.
Shifting EarthPulls the opponent toward Toph while avoiding highs.Pulling without a prepared follow-up only resets the question.

Your first 30-minute lab route

  1. Record a single-hit and multi-hit attack, then compare Rooted Stance.
  2. Test Rock Slide against highs, lows and throws.
  3. Build one knockdown into Shifting Earth or pillar coverage.
  4. Treat the 7-Chakra command grab as a read, not a combo target.

Toph combo and lab studies

Route cards explicitly record starter, support, resources, position, build, and evidence status. A card without complete notation is a research lead, not a finished combo to copy.

What will Avatar fans recognize?

Rock Slide, seismic-sense tricks, rock armor and the completed taunt all pull from recognizable Toph moments, while the mechanics preserve her refusal to fight on anyone else’s terms.
