Who should play Zuko?
Zuko’s best design joke is also his real gameplan: he becomes more complete as he earns Redemption. Fans get the Blue Spirit, the Dancing Dragon, and the final Agni Kai references, but they also get a meter that rewards making increasingly honest decisions instead of simply flipping a power switch.
Pressure and confirms
Easy to start, technical to optimize
Fire
—
- Readable pressure with several route branches
- Support choice visibly changes Redemption gain
- Useful defensive counterplay through Honor Pivot
- Divekick and jump routes add execution quickly
- Some Combo Trials have community-reported errors
- Redemption routes depend on the selected support
Zuko's first match plan
Walk the opponent toward the corner with safe confirms and controlled projectiles, then use Ground Fire to make the knockdown matter. Burning Advance and its branches let Zuko change rhythm; Redemption Chain turns a confirmed special into continued offense. Do not force unsafe branches on block just because a combo version exists.
Redemption is a route system, not a passive buff
Zuko earns Redemption through different actions depending on support: Mai favors projectile play, June favors divekicks, and Ran & Shaw favor grounded Flow and chain follow-ups. Higher Redemption unlocks stronger critical-hit rewards and eventually combines more of his toolset. The practical lesson is to choose a support that rewards what you can already perform consistently. Building a theoretical meter route that fails neutral is slower than earning Redemption through a simple plan you actually use.
How should you choose a support?
Supports are not traditional active assists. They modify movement, move properties, resources, or combo routes, so there is no context-free “best support.”
Mai
Improves projectiles and rewards projectile-based Redemption play.
Pick for: For measured space control and easier ranged confirms.
June
Enhances divekick routes and their Redemption plan.
Pick for: For players ready to practice air conversions.
Ran & Shaw
Improves ground movement and grounded Flow-chain play.
Pick for: For fast neutral movement and grounded pressure.
Which key moves should you learn first?
| Move | Purpose | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Burning Advance | A forward Flow run with pressure, launcher, jump and halt branches. | Choose the branch from the opponent’s response, not from habit. |
| Honor Pivot | An immediate defensive stance that counters non-low attacks. | It does not cover lows and should not replace blocking. |
| Ground Fire | A low attack and persistent area for knockdown pressure. | Its slower versions need a real setup. |
| Sunborn Skyward Blast | An upward projectile for catching airborne opponents. | The critical reward requires a clean anti-air hit, not an existing combo. |
Your first 30-minute lab route
- Confirm a short A/B/C string into one safe special.
- Set the dummy to alternate high and low attacks, then test Honor Pivot.
- Create one Ground Fire knockdown setup near the corner.
- Repeat the same sequence with each support and watch Redemption gain.
Zuko combo and lab studies
Route cards explicitly record starter, support, resources, position, build, and evidence status. A card without complete notation is a research lead, not a finished combo to copy.
